There is a very general feeling that a mat-shed camp

on the foreshore of Kowloon facing the Lyemoon Pass is a

most unsuitable place in which to intern 300 prisonere,

especially as the whole place might readily be wrecked

in a typhoon, and a petition very largely signed has been

sent to the Governor asking that the prisoners be removed

-

elsewhere to Australia for choice. I understand the

Military Authorities have already made very strong

representations on the subject.

I am informed, the Governor has impressed upon the

liquidators the necessity for doing all in their power

to preserve as much as possible the good-will of the

various German firms.

This is precisely what we do not wish and to our

mind one of the reasons why the Germans should be removed

to Australia is that, in this case, many of them will in

all probability not be in a position to return to China

on peace being declared.

I have recently been informed on good authority that

a very considerable trade in German goods such as Berlin

wools, aniline dyes, &c., &c., is being carried on in

China,

I
